Platte County Deputy Sheriff, Christopher Johnson, 34, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Saturday, August 29, 2009, as a result of an auto accident on Highway 91 near Cornlea, Nebraska, in the line of duty.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 2 at 11:00 AM at the Columbus Agriculture Park with Rev. Mark Wetzler officiating. Private family interment will be at a later date. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the family. A memorial fund has been set up at all Tier One Banks in Nebraska.

Chris was born June 17, 1975 in Wayne, Nebraska, to Randall and Lorraine (Neiman) Johnson. He graduated from Wayne High School in 1994. Chris started his Law Enforcement career at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls in 1996 and then the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) Facility in Florence, Arizona from 1997 to 1998. He served at the Walthill Police Department, Walthill, Nebraska, from May 2001 to August 2002, and the West Point Police Department, West Point, Nebraska, from August 2002 to February 2006. In 2006, Chris joined the Platte County Sheriff's Office in Columbus, Nebraska. Chris was certified at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Center, Grand Island, Nebraska, on June 19, 2003. He was a certified firearms instructor and a certified TAZER instructor. Chris was Platte County Sheriff employee of the year in 2006.

He was united in marriage to Stephanie Hoessel on August 11, 2007, at the Federated Church in Columbus. Chris enjoyed hunting, guns, golfing, farming with his dad, facebook farming, fishing, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, sniper competitions, and reloading his own ammunition.

My deepest sympathies to Steph and Cole. It is still very hard to believe that Christ is not still here. I keep remembering when we were kids and how when we would play Sheila and Melisa made Chris and I pretend to get married (even though I think we both thought it was silly) but you do what you are instructed to do by the "bossy cousins" :-) I keep remembering the way Lorraine would always say Chris's name, she rarely called him Chris it was usually Christ-o-pher. I have several memories that just keep going through my head from when we were kids and it makes me sad to know that there will not be any more memories to make with him. You always new you could count on him if you needed him. He also had an infectious laugh that would make the room laugh right along with him. I am so glad that I got to see him a month ago so I have the current memory in my mind of his laughing and smile on that night. Seems like this is all just a dream that we will wake up from. My son Quintin probably said it best in his thinking....God must have needed him in heaven to keep the "bad guys" out of heaven and I believe he is up there watching out for all of us and will help to protect us from the "bad guys". Although there were many, many tears there were times we were all able to smile & even laugh just a bit. it is my hope that you can move on from this day & keep those laughing moments close to your heart. It's impossible to understand why your time with Chris was so short but what an amazing thing it is, that everything lined up perfect that night a few years ago when we got to meet Deputy Johnson in his cruiser in front of Platte Center's fire station (that night he graciously warned me that I was going 10 over the posted speed limit for downtown P.C.) and I got to witness the very beginning of what was to be a match made in Heaven! I will never hear "Lost in this moment" and not think of the two of you and the love that you shared! You are not alone Stephanie...we are here if you need anything! Wow what a shock little brother! I really believed that you were pulling another prank on us. I kept waiting for you to come in and say Boo!!! I am going to miss you forever. I remember the laughs we had together. I also remember the tear we shared. You were my support when things were totally frustrating. There are so many things to remember that could write a book. The few that stand out the most are you playing tractors in the garden, putting your tongue on the monkey bars cause I told you it was cool, or the fort we built in grandpa's corn crib. We were too cool. I also remember going to the creek to catch minnows so we could go fishing at Isaac Walton's Lake. We had so much planned to do for the rest of the future. You left us way too soon. Everyone says it gets easier but I find each day gets harder. I don't want to forget your laugh, voice, jokes, blue eyes, your double smile on your forehead. I can't imagine life without you. When the hawk flew over your procession today, I felt a sense of peace knowing you are ok. You are my baby brother that always made things right. So help me fix you being gone. Until then, fly high and proud with the eagles. You wanted a party and brother you had a lot of people there to say goodbye. hi everyone my name is Nathan crouch and i dedicate this speech t my uncle Chris. tans uncle Chris for everything you have done for me. if it wasn't for you i would of went crazy. you were the only one that could ever trust ad talk to and poor everything out to. I went to high school with Chris. He was a year older than me. I just feel so honored to have known him. I remember his infectious smile and laugh. Anyone who heard his laugh couldn't help but laugh right along with. It was very contagious! I also miss that Daytona that he drove around. I just sit here and picture him in it with a great big smile. I never saw Chris with anything other than a smile on his face. God took a very special person, but had a reason for it. It just all doesn't make sense quite yet. We all can feel comfortable knowing though that he is looking down over us from heaven. Chris always wanted to help people, hence why he chose his profession. I'm sure he did a great job protecting his community and keeping everyone safe!! Please know that he will never be forgotten and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this very hard time. Chris will be missed by many!

Chris, we will miss you so much. I will last remember you when you, Steph and Cole came down to visit me. You stayed with Harry at Jax Beach. Rich, from Arizona also came down to see you too. It was a great and fun time we had when we all met at the "Crab Shack" along with Harry's parents. We all laughed so hard and had a good time. Then you all did your thing the next day and called me and wanted to come to my house, so I made plans for you to come to dinner. I baked a couple things and then went to the store and got whatever I needed to make a meal you'd all enjoy. There really wasn't that much left, except for a few brownies and some fruit, so I sent that home with you all to enjoy at Harry's house. We had such a good time. It is just so hard for us to know that you are gone, but your memories will live on forever in our hearts. Some day we will all be together in heaven with you and share the joys of life with you.
